Why Romeo and Juliet now, centuries after Shakespeare wrote it?

“Because dying of love at 15 is both the most “beautiful” and the most terrible fate.

Because that absolute and irrevocable act of choosing to die together rather than living separately will always remain the strangest mystery and the clearest proof of love.

Because life without love is empty.”

Throughout his career, Gérard Presgurvic was always fascinated by the union of music and image. Initially dedicating himself to movies, he made short features and composed film scores before turning to songwriting. After composing the music for the cult song 5 Heures du Mat’ (a phenomenal success), he started writing hits for leading French singers.

But he dreamed of writing musicals since he was 14 years old. As a child, Gérard Presgurvic had never missed the Fred Astaire and Minelli musical movies. And West Side Story was a revelation for him. In 2001, he finally accomplished that long-standing dream: he wrote  ROMEO&JULIET, his first musical.  From this marriage of his two artistic passions, theater and music, an incredible success had been created: Roméo et Juliette, de la haine à l’amour,  that attracted 2 millions spectators and sold 6 million Cds and DVDs in France alone.

Since then, ROMEO&JULIET has been produced with similar outstanding success in more than 14 languages around the world.

Now the 39-song musical has been freshly adapted in English by Hélène Dallaire Magadini for the American audience.
